Face Identification is a no-fuss easy to use feature that removes the frustration of endless scrolling for potential customers. When enabled, our system use AI technology to automatically identify and tag people as you upload your photos. At purchase time, participants upload a selfie, and the system searches your entire photo gallery to find images where they appear - reducing manual tagging work and improving customer satisfaction.
How it works
Face Identification starts working as soon as photos are uploaded to an event. Searching is ready almost immediately after the final image has finished uploading and will be available as soon as the event is opened for ordering.
Customers are able to search the entire event with just a selfie or photo. On mobile devices, customers will be prompted to snap a quick selfie using their phone’s camera. Alternatively, they can select a photo from their own gallery to find matching images.
How to use
Face Identification is extremely simple to use and can be enabled per event with a single click.
When creating a new Standard or School event, simply select the Face Identification option. For Race events, you can choose to use race number recognition, face identification, or both.
Once enabled, there’s nothing more for you to do — the system automatically handles all tagging as photos are uploaded.
Accuracy
Face Identification works best for events where faces and eyes are mostly unobstructed. This includes many sporting codes such as road running, dance, gymnastics, martial arts, rugby, hockey, netball, water polo, and more.
For events where helmets or sunglasses are common, accuracy may vary depending on the sport. For example, equestrian helmets sit higher on the head and leave more of the face visible compared to cycling helmets, which can reduce visibility.
Below is a quick summary of accuracy by event type:
Excellent Results
✓ Road running, trail running, athletics
✓ Dance competitions, cheerleading
✓ Gymnastics, trampolining
✓ Martial arts (karate, taekwondo, judo)
✓ Team sports with visible faces (rugby, hockey, netball, basketball, water polo)
✓ Swimming (especially finish and podium shots)
✓ Fitness competitions, CrossFit
Good Results
✓ Equestrian sports (show jumping, dressage, eventing)
✓ Tennis, squash, badminton
✓ Softball, baseball
✓ Rowing, dragon boating
Limited Results
⚠ Cycling (road, mountain, BMX) - helmets and sunglasses obstruct faces
⚠ Motor sports - full helmets obscure features
⚠ Skiing/snowboarding - goggles and cold weather gear
⚠ Events with full-face helmets such as batsmen in Cricket
Photography Tips for Better Matching
Distance:
- Keep faces at least 50x50 pixels in final image
- Closer shots = higher match rates
- Consider tighter framing for non-action moments
Angles:
- Frontal and semi-frontal angles work best
- Profile shots have lower match rates
- Avoid extreme top-down or bottom-up angles for key moments
Lighting:
- Even, well-lit faces improve matching
- Avoid harsh shadows across faces
- Indoor events: watch for mixed lighting that obscures features
Timing:
- Capture moments when faces are visible and composed
- Between-action shots often match better than peak-action
- Anticipate moments when participants look toward camera
